Epic Movie! Jonathan Liebesman talks…

darkness

You’ve worked with some immense actors in your career. How does it feel to marshal the likes of Liam Neilson and Ralf Fiennes?

It’s incredible. I mean Schindler’s List is one of my favourite films, it’s a very meaningful movie to me.  To me it was incredible to be sitting in the same room as these guys. I don’t know how I got here, because in South Africa movie making seemed so far away. Then you become a part of it and meet people who did things that meant so much to you when you were younger, and it is very surreal. As you know they are extremely talented, its kind of awesome to have these guys as sounding boards for your ideas, and to use their ideas to make scenes better. They were a gift, and if you have a big Hollywood movie with an A-List cast you should be using them. To have Liam and Ralph in a scene together and being able to direct them is a dream come true for me.  It is a joy just to watch these two guys act together.

Finally, how did you find shooting in 3D? What’s your take on 3D as a whole?

I think a lot of movies in 3D don’t really take advantage of it. I mean, do you really have to pay extra cash for this? You have to think about it and at least provide the audience with a reason to pay that extra money to see it. In terms of making a film in 3D, there are many ways to achieve the same result. 3D can work, you’ve just got to do it the right way.
